CMVictory: finding a vaccine for cytomegalovirus, a serious virus for unborn babies

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a relatively benign virus for most, but if contracted in pregnancy, the virus can be transmitted to the unborn baby with devastating consequences. It is the leading cause of birth defects around the world, including vision and hearing loss, cerebral palsy and even death.

For the CMVictory Trial, over 7,300 women around the world enrolled to take part and help with the development of a world-first vaccine providing protection against CMV. This year saw the early completion of the CMVictory Trial, and while the study didn’t meet its vaccine efficacy goal, we remain incredly proud of what was achieved. We had 25 amazing participants, including Mum Emily with her beautiful baby Eloise pictured above, with a total of 90 clinic visits completed this year alone. Additionally, five adorable babies were born this year, some of whom joined in our infant sub-study.

We would like to thank everyone involved for their time, effort and positive attitude throughout the trial - it’s been a big team effort and we couldn’t have done it without you. Your contribution has definitely bought us a little closer to improving future vaccines.
